Finalist in National Business Awards and Imposter Syndrome
Share
I've been named a finalist in the Ausmumpreneur National Business Awards, a prestigious national business award, and it is a genuine achievement. Yet here I am, picture and badge to prove it in hand, feeling all of the imposter feels. Imposter syndrome is especially common among creative entrepreneurs and makers, where the work feels so personal that success can feel like luck rather than skill.
Here's the truth I know: I was selected because of my work, my vision, and my dedication, and it stood out. The judges didn't make a mistake. My handmade stationery, my brand aesthetic, my commitment to quality—these aren't accidents. They're the result of deliberate choices and countless hours of craft. Yet the feeling remains...
Reframe the narrative - What I'll do instead
Imposter syndrome thrives on comparison and self-doubt. Instead, I will try anchoring myself in facts. I have written down three specific things I've built or achieved with this business that I know I am proud of because I know how hard fought for they have been. These are real, measurable accomplishments.
Separate worth from the outcome
I'm a finalist because of what I have already done, not because of what happens next. The award itself doesn't define my value as a maker or business owner. I was already worthy before the nomination arrived, and I will remain worthy regardless of the final result. This distinction takes pressure off and lets me enjoy the recognition for what it is—validation of work already completed. Well, there's a significant relief right there.
Share the moment authentically
My customers, my community, and my team have been part of this journey. Sharing this finalist status—and my honest feelings about it—builds connection and trust. Vulnerability isn't weakness; it's what makes this brand human and relatable.
I have earned this. Now, where is the wine?
